Evaluation Question 5

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/ address your audience?

We attracted the younger side of our audience (aged 15-25) by having a young adult who’s age is meant to be roughly 20-25 therefore, initially this may seem appealing to them because they may feel like they can relate. However, when watching the film it would be hard for this age to group to relate to the main character because we have purposefully have subverted the audience’s expectation of her being a usual young adult stereotype by doing things that seem a bit shady, which is emphasised by the music alongside those actions.

We have been able to attract some of the male audience by having a female as our main character. Once again, we have subverted their expectation because unlike a lot of thrillers that involve a young blonde white Caucasian woman in them, I have directed our main character to walk with an assertive movement so she seems stronger and not weak like in other thriller films. Also I wanted her to wear an outfit which would cover most of her skin and also had our actor to wear trousers instead of a skirt because skirts are a common association with the female gender because it may seem more appealing or feminine which is thought of as weak and by wearing trousers, which is what most men wear in films it could represent a more masculine aspect of her which is strong and assertive and doesn’t objectify her in anyway.

Furthermore, the last reason is also how I have addressed the female audience as director. Because we have made our female lead role seem confident and assertive this may make female viewers intrigued in the film more because this is not a usual convention of a thriller film.

In addition, we have also attracted our audience through the mise-en-scene. I think we have done this at the beginning of our opening sequence with the map and pictures. The fact that we left very limited information on the frame may appeal to audiences because they are curious and what to find out more about what is going on in the story and how is the briefcase involved, so we have also used enigmas.
